Intent

Christ Church school is an inclusive community where children are encouraged to aim high; developing self-confidence, their beliefs, a sense of community and caring attitudes towards others. PSHE is central to this ethos and aims to provide pupils with the knowledge and understanding to help them live fulfilled and responsible lives. The children in our school have a range of family backgrounds and life experiences. It is important that we build upon these experiences to provide an understanding of the diversity in our country and the world around them. The intent is to develop tolerant, respectful young people, prepared to tackle many of the moral and social issues that arise when growing up in modern Britain.

We aim to build a PSHE curriculum which develops learning and builds on knowledge as children move through the school, preparing them to be global citizens. They will develop emotional intelligence and the ability to articulate their feelings in order to maintain good mental health as well as understanding the importance of their physical health. We will give children the knowledge to be able to make informed choices to stay safe, both in the physical and online world. Using a growth mindset strategy, the children will become resilient, flexible learners, knowledgeable for the future.

Implementation

We believe that PSHE plays an integral part of primary education and therefore should be taught weekly. PSHE is taught in line with Camden and LDBS guidance, alongside a deep understanding of the needs of our school community. PSHE lessons are taught as individual sessions or in blocks where appropriate so that we can best meet the children’s needs. PSHE themes are also an embedded part of the curriculum taught through cross curricular activities, for example in Literacy, Science and RE. There may be occasions where teachers may feel it necessary to teach PSHE as a result of an issue arisen in their own class, or in the community, and they are allowed the flexibility to do this.

When starting a topic, teachers find out children’s prior knowledge to help plan the teaching. Pupils have opportunities to express their views and listen to others respectfully; to research and evaluate information and make informed decisions. Class teachers use a range of teaching methods to cover the PSHE curriculum including drama, debate, written work and art. We also invite outside visitors to support, enhance and enrich the curriculum. As children move through the school, they will revisit broad topics, reflecting and building on their prior knowledge by exploring themes in more depth.

PSHE is also an important part of whole school life and assemblies are used as an opportunity to stimulate and challenge children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity through taking part in initiatives such as Anti-Bullying week, Mental Health Week and International Day of Happiness. Outside of teaching in PSHE lessons children are offered opportunities to develop their sense of belonging by taking part in volunteering, School Council and the playground friends’ scheme.

Impact

In PSHE, outcomes will be shared in a whole class book. This will contain examples of written work, photographs, and reflections from the children to show how they have progressed in their understanding of themselves and their place as a citizen of Camden and the wider society. Children will also make progress across the wider curriculum, applying the learning skills they have gained through PSHE in other subjects.

Within school children and adults will be respectful towards each other and be tolerant of religious and cultural differences; applying the British Values of Democracy, mutual respect, tolerance, rule of law and liberty. Our pupil voice surveys will be used to evidence that children feel safe and emotionally confident within school, providing opportunities to support pupils further where necessary.

As children move through the school, they will develop positive and healthy relationships with their peers, which will help them now and in the future. Children will feel prepared for challenges they may come across as they move through their learning journey preparing them for life and eventually work in modern Britain.
